Most clinical language around complex trauma focuses on management:
emotional regulation
symptom reduction
learning to cope
long-term maintenance

Many trauma resources emphasize that recovery may involve “ongoing management” rather than full resolution.

Important work — yes.

But that framing creates a ceiling.

There was a time when I thought healing meant I could function.

I had learned how to cope.
I had learned how to mask.
I had learned how to push through.

Wake up.

Doctor’s appointment.

I was doing everything I was supposed to do.

Seven months.

I have never been able to say that before.

For 44.5 years, I lived in trafficking.

When I finally escaped, I was told something I will never forget.

That I would never fully heal.
That my brain had been wired too long in survival.
That the damage was permanent.
That the best I could hope for was management.

Not healing. Management.

I was placed on what I call the PTSD cocktail.
Multiple medications.
Heavy diagnoses.
And the quiet expectation that I would eventually be institutionalized.

But somewhere deep inside me, I knew they were wrong.

I did not want to manage my life.
I wanted to reclaim it.

So I began walking a different path.
Not alone — someone helped me walk it — but differently than what I was told was possible.

That path became my healing.

Today, I do not take medication.
I do not live in flashbacks.
My body knows the difference between hot and cold.
I do not have panic attacks.
I have memories, but they do not control me.

I can go to the bathroom without permission.
I can plant roots.
I can build something that lasts.

Yes, I am still aware.
Yes, there are risks.
But I am not running anymore.

I am thriving.

Today, I serve as the Director of Project Angel.

The model we use was not created in a boardroom.
It was built through the path I had to walk to heal.

Trauma-conscious care at Project Angel exists because I was told healing wasn’t possible — and proved that it was.

We are not managing symptoms.

THE DEFINITION IS THE PROBLEM

We’re told we already know what trafficking is. That it’s clearly defined.
But here’s the truth: if we can’t define trafficking clearly, we can’t confront it honestly. And the current global definition? It’s vague — and that vagueness protects power, not people.

International law defines trafficking as “the use of force, fraud, coercion, or abuse of power for the purpose of exploitation.”
At first glance, that sounds solid. But ask yourself — what is exploitation? Who decides what counts? Why are some forms of exploitation normalized, while others are criminalized?

A child star generating millions for a studio is called talent.
A rural child helping in their family’s store is labeled cultural.
A teen influencer monetized by adults is applauded.
A girl on the street is prosecuted.

The difference isn’t in the impact. It’s in the optics.

And here’s where it gets even more absurd: based on this definition, you could argue that every voting citizen has been trafficked.

How? A politician makes promises — jobs, safety, stability — to win your vote. Then they break those promises, abuse that power, and enrich themselves. That’s fraud. That’s coercion. That’s abuse of power for gain.

So why aren’t those in power prosecuted? Because trafficking laws are written by systems, not survivors. And systems protect themselves.

Trafficking is real.
So is misdefinition.
And until we stop letting headlines and institutions define it for us, we’ll keep missing the truth — and the people who need our support most.

What I see when I watch a trafficking documentary?

Isn’t my story.
Isn’t most survivors’ stories.
Isn’t the truth.

It’s a version made to sell.

Because let’s be honest — most of these headlines, exposés, and streaming specials aren’t built to educate or restore.
They’re designed to shock.
To be just palatable enough to make people feel concerned,
but not uncomfortable enough to make them act.

They focus on what’s marketable, not what’s real.

You see famous faces, dramatic raids, political conspiracies.
You see perpetrators as villains, systems as broken, and survivors as silent.
And what you don’t see?
The actual story.

You don’t see the daily trauma.
You don’t see the shame, the fear, the complexity.
You don’t see survivors living in plain sight —
in neighborhoods, in families, in workplaces —
because that version doesn’t sell.

You don’t see the way media centers perpetrators so no one has to face the victim.
You don’t see how laws shift to inflate stats,
lumping unrelated crimes into “trafficking” to show progress,
while real survivors are left without care,
without shelter,
without a name.

You don’t see what it’s like to try and heal
when the world is busy arguing about whether you even exist.

That’s the danger of sensationalism.
It makes the truth feel like a lie — and the lie feel familiar.

And for so many survivors, it creates a new wound:
Watching our lived reality turned into entertainment.
Watching the truth buried under conspiracy.
Watching the world ask, “Is she even telling the truth?”

Here’s the truth:
Real trafficking is often invisible.
It’s complex.
It doesn’t look like what they show you.
It looks like people hiding in plain sight.
It looks like manipulation, coercion, isolation — not chains.
It looks like someone you love.

Survivor Wisdom as Expertise

After I escaped, I did everything I was told I was supposed to do.

I called the trafficking hotlines.
I followed their lists.
I reached out to the programs they said were built for people like me.

The first one told me I’d aged out — they don’t take survivors over 30.
The second had a waitlist over 600 people long.
When I did the intake, they told me I’d been in too long. That I wasn’t the “right fit.”
The third offered short-term counseling. Twice a week, for one month. Then nothing.

I started calling out of state. Same story.
Too old. Too long. Too complex. Too much.

So I looked outside the system — to therapists, art therapy, Reiki.
I was quoted $300 to $475 a week.
I had no job. No income. No one.

I wasn’t too broken.
Their boxes were too small.

Survivors aren’t failing the system.
The system is failing the survivors.

This week, we speak the truth.
Survivor wisdom is not a footnote.
It’s the whole map.

There’s no shortage of money.
Just a shortage of care.

In 2024, the U.S. government spent over $101 million on the “issue” of human trafficking.
The United Nations spent $550 million globally.

But according to official budget reports from both the U.S. and the UN,
less than $470,000 of that reached actual survivor care.
Not even half a million dollars — combined.
(Based on comparative reporting data from UNODC and U.S. DOJ 2024 reports.)

By contrast, $1 billion is spent each year in the U.S. on domestic violence survivor support,
with over $400 million going to direct care globally.

Here’s what makes this even harder to understand:

📈 Reported cases of trafficking are 19.2% higher than reported domestic violence cases worldwide.

And yet, nearly all the funding goes to prevention, policing, or awareness campaigns —
not to the survivors themselves.

And still, trafficking is the fastest growing criminal empire on the planet.
So not only is it not being stopped — it’s growing.

The number of victims keeps rising.
The number of survivors needing help keeps rising.

And these are just the ones we know about.
According to U.N. and U.S. data, only 6.7% of human trafficking victims are ever identified.

That means 93% are still hidden — still waiting for someone to come looking.

That’s why Project Angel exists.
Not to talk about “fighting trafficking.”
But to walk with the people who’ve lived it.
To bring real, lasting healing — where systems won’t.

There was no place for me.

When I escaped, I spent three years looking for help.
I tried everything people said would work — domestic violence shelters, complex trauma programs, even inpatient care.
But nothing fit.
Nothing understood.

Because I wasn’t just healing from trauma.
I was trying to survive what most people have never heard spoken aloud.

Some programs turned me away — said my story was “too much.”
Others tried to cram me into systems that weren’t built for survivors of trafficking.
They couldn’t see what this kind of trauma really does to a person.

And the ones who wanted to help — they meant well.
But they didn’t have the tools.
They didn’t understand the layers:
The fear. The flashbacks. The deep body programming.
The loss of self.
The way you forget how to even exist.

So I became the experiment.

I tried everything — and slowly, I began to find what worked.
Not to manage symptoms.
But to actually begin healing.

Not coping.
Not suppressing.
But healing.

And from those years of walking with those who truly saw me — guides, mentors, teachers who helped me find the way back to myself —
Project Angel was born.

Not as a program.
But as a space.
A way.
A home for healing that doesn’t ask survivors to fit into systems that never saw them.

Since 2020, we’ve supported survivors around the world — online and in person.
What we’ve built now includes a sanctuary home in Peru, services for children and adults, and a way of healing that reaches the parts mainstream systems won’t touch.

Every path is different.
But no one who’s walked this path with us is still stuck in the pain they carried.

What seems like a simple question to most can feel like a landmine to a survivor.

Because for many of us, decision-making wasn’t just discouraged — it was dangerous.
In trafficking, every “choice” came with an invisible test.
Pick the wrong sandwich, the wrong shirt, the wrong tone — and the consequences could be silence, starvation, assault.

When I escaped, I didn’t know how to choose anymore.
I wasn’t indecisive — I was traumatized.
What the world calls “decision paralysis” was, for me, survival instinct.

That’s why at Project Angel, we don’t just hand survivors back their choices and say “you decide now.”

We walk with them gently.

Sometimes, that looks like offering lasagna for dinner — without making them choose.
Sometimes, it’s saying,
“Here are three options. You don’t have to pick right now.”
Sometimes, it’s just holding space while their nervous system learns that no one’s going to punish them for saying yes… or no.

This isn’t about taking power from survivors.
It’s about creating trauma-conscious containers that let power return to them — in their time, their way.

Myth: Trauma is trauma — and trauma-informed care works for everyone.

Truth: Mainstream trauma care was not built for survivors of trafficking.

What most people call trauma — an accident, a loss, a single violent event — is not the same as being enslaved, abused, and controlled for years or even decades.

Trafficking is not just physical or psychological. It targets the soul. It fractures identity. It erodes spirit. It’s not just trauma of the mind — it’s trauma of the entire being.

And yet, the systems offering “care” are rooted in protocols and science that stop at the nervous system. Talk therapy, worksheets, group sessions — none of that reaches the spiritual and energetic devastation trafficking causes.

At Project Angel, we don’t try to fit survivors into formulas that weren’t made for them.

Art therapy. Talk therapy. Reiki. EMDR.
Even a mental institution.

But nothing met me where I was.
There was no system built for the kind of trauma I carried.
And when I did try to speak, most didn’t believe me.

On a last-ditch effort, I reached out to one person.
She didn’t ask me to go anywhere.
She didn’t hand me a checklist or try to fix me.
She simply asked:
“What’s on your heart right now?”

That was the beginning.
No agenda. No force.
Just presence.

It was in that moment — during an intake interview that turned into a shared journey —
I realized: healing was possible.
